Why Do Lutherans Celebrate Reformation Day?
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther circulated his Ninety-Five Theses in Wittenberg, Germany, challenging the misuse of indulgences and calling for theological discussion. This moment became the traditional beginning of the Lutheran Reformation, a movement seeking to restore the Church’s teaching and practice to the authority of Holy Scripture. At its heart was the biblical proclamation that sinners are justified by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ, apart from works of the Law.
The Reformation’s Influence on Church, State, and Home
The Lutheran Reformation profoundly influenced worship, preaching, education, and daily Christian life. Luther’s Small Catechism helped parents teach the Ten Commandments, Apostles’ Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper within their households. The Reformation also renewed attention to Christian vocation and the distinction between the Church’s spiritual authority and the responsibilities of civil government.
These teachings remind us that faith is not confined to Sunday worship. Christians serve God through ordinary vocations as parents, children, teachers, neighbors, and citizens. The Gospel brings forgiveness and peace to troubled consciences, while God’s Word guides Christians in lives of grateful service.
Join Redeemer Lutheran Church for Reformation Day
As a confessional Lutheran church in Salt Lake City, Redeemer rejoices in the historic Christian faith confessed in the Lutheran Book of Concord. Reformation Day is not simply a celebration of Martin Luther or an anniversary of historical events; it is an opportunity to give thanks for Christ, His saving Word, and His Church. We warmly invite families from Salt Lake City, Sugar House, Millcreek, Ogden, and surrounding Utah communities to join us for worship and fellowship.
Come hear the Gospel, sing the hymns of the Church, and celebrate the gracious gifts of our Savior together. We look forward to gathering with our brothers and sisters in Christ at St. Paul Lutheran Church on October 31. All are welcome!
